Today you asked to wear a bow
And then wanted to see it.
Your smile widened,
Your eyes, they twinkled.
Too pretty to believe it.
Then without a moment’s notice,
The scene began to change.
For within seconds of your smile,
You were filled with rage.
I’d pried a marble from your fist,
For fear that you might choke.
Your face turned red, blood full-boiled,
Ears began to smoke.
I took what’s yours,
Straight from your hand.
Violation,
You dared not stand.
Smile gone, pitch turned high,
You aimed your wrath at me.
Your yelling, shrieking, screaming,
Revealed what you can be.
But as your fire blazed at me,
I recalled the news.
Again, the world took one more step
Toward overtaking you.
Another HE has come to power
With blame for every woe.
And I’ve learned, you’ll pay the price,
Because you wear that bow.
Today your flame and fury
were lit by good intention.
But I want you prepared
For crimes of his invention.
So I won’t call a ceasefire,
Nor demand your gentle quiet.
I’ll watch you scorch the earth,
Never to be silent.
I’ll let you roar and breathe your fire,
So you know how to use it.
Try it out. Hone your aim.
I don’t want you to lose it.
For when he pushes,
Or when he pulls,
And when they take what’s yours,
You, my dear, will know how
To set fire to your wars.
Raise your voice. Take up space.
What better way to learn?
I’ll be right here next to you,
And I will let you burn.
